Session 1 — The Lost Expedition

What Happened

The Crew (Owlbear Division):

  • Kylos: crystal-dragonborn Commander. Trained with Father Bokan’s monk-wizard band; the fire still won’t quite come.
  • Bivel: Underdark kobold. KO’d in a Hearth fight-club by Kaldor the Killer (bugbear, wielding the Immovable Rod). Woke to Selka, signed on.
  • Felicity “Tea” Horseradish: nursing plain wine at The Blue Flame when Big Berra bet her 100 gold she couldn’t hack the Guild. She took the bet.
  • Sylvia Caligo: at dying Mother Helene’s side in the Wastes (Feb, Year 10). Helene was Sylvia’s childhood companion, not her mother. Took the Shaman’s Mark, left the clans for good. Travels with dire-wolf pup Ghoul.
  • Nyla Ito: Nereid. Heard the voice of Carnan out in the northern ocean and saw a vision of warmth, and healing for her reef: Hearth.
  • Arlo Ventura: young, mace-only, no jacket. Charged three Gnashers outside the gate before he broke stride.

(Yes, Nyla Ito and Guild Seer Nyla Vexorian are different people. Lol)

The Briefing: Luthor Shrike called the recruits to the Guildhall table, named the team Owlbear Division, first expedition since the Guild contracted ~5 years back. Mission: relic site NE of Hearth, ~2 days out. Nyla Vexorian introduced as Guild Seer.

The Trek: Out the gate, and about a day into travel, a black oil trail on the snow, passed over. Camped overnight. A hulking Magitek-era automaton stomped and dripped oil into the firelight: it gave directions that skipped a day and asked for a charged crystal (it was running low). The party called it Amber, but it said its name was M.A.P. It left.

The Site: The relic site was the wrecked auto-sled of a prior Guild expedition (v1.0 emblem) jammed in a cliff crevice. Mass Gnasher tracks. The party descended into the control cab.

Combat: Four Gnashers in the cab, one wearing a glinting amber Circlet of Blasting. Felicity ID’d it. Felicity took the circlet-bearer’s head and caught the circlet. Gnashers flooded up the hole beneath the cab. Nyla Ito let lightning loose. Then the big arrival: a Hulking Snow Flea with Gnasher riders. Arlo got the sled running again while Kylos tweaked. Sylvia slammed the gas, and they took off. As a snow flea squad cornered in the remaining heroes, Sylvia rammed the sled into the pursuing snow flea. Both wrecked.

The Bargain: A Gnasher with a huge, magical axe climbed up and offered: “relics for your freedom, collect your losses.” Felicity handed over the Circlet of Blasting and the party walked out with their lives. A baby snow flea, Namurt, rubbed against Felicity’s leg. She kept it.

Back at Hearth: Owlbear Division returned intact. Luthor covered the Hearth Engine fuel as a one-time Guild courtesy on their close brush with death. No relic burned on this trip, and only the Goggles of Night were procured by Bivel. Felicity’s bet with Big Berra is technically, just barely, settled - her party returned with a relic, and their lives.

Notable Events

  • Sylvia rammed the auto-sled into the Hulking Snow Flea, wrecking both. The Gnasher riders were killed.
  • Unknown Bigger-axe Gnasher offered a bargain: relics for freedom. Party surrendered the Circlet of Blasting.
  • Felicity adopted Namurt, a baby snow flea that rubbed against her leg after the bargain.
  • Luthor Shrike covered the Hearth Engine fuel personally as a one-time Guild courtesy. No relic burned. THIS TIME.
  • Big Berra’s 100-gold bet with Felicity is technically settled (Felicity came back with a relic in the party), and her gold number in her inventory has been updated.

The Hearth Engine

  • Luthor Shrike covered the Engine fuel as a one-time Guild courtesy. No relic or manuscript burned this session.
